State-of-the-art Programmable Proximity Fuzes and Guided Projectiles for 76mm and 127mm Guns allow OTO Melara's Systems to reach top levels of effectiveness in any of the operational roles emerging within evolving scenarios. Today, Naval Artilleries are required to play various and challenging roles: Protection from Asymmetric Threats, Naval Fire Support, Air and Anti-Missile Defence in complex littoral waters scenario. In some respect, a new era may be envisaged as Naval Guns are now requested to perform new and relevant roles in the modern warfare. Committed to fulfil any present and future requirement and with the aim to consolidate its leadership position in the market, OTO Melara is today focused on the implementation of novel technologies allowing top-level performance for its products.

In the area of Medium Calibre Weapons, the company is engaged in various development programmes involving Smart Ammunition: all the relevant activities are performed in the frame of Contracts responding to the requirements of the Italian Navy and funded by the Italian Government, but there are also development programmes based on foreign contracts.

For its 76/62  Naval Guns, today in service with 56 customers worldwide, OTO Melara has completed the development and the qualification of the new 3A Plus Multi-Function Programmable Fuze for conventional ammunition now in service for Italian Navy and France Navy. STRALES System and DART Ammunition have finished the development and are under qualification, a small batch of DART have been produced for Italian Navy and Colombian Navy.

In the field of Naval Artilleries, the STRALES System implements the revolutionary technology of Guided Ammunition so that a 76mm Naval Gun is as effective as missiles but at an extremely lower cost. As for 127mm Naval Guns, OTO Melara leads the industrial team of the Vulcano project. Such a project focuses on the development of a family of Multi-Role Extended Range (ER) Ammunition, both Guided (Shells with non-ballistic flight) and Conventional (Shells with ballistic flight). Following the results achieved in the development phase, all the technologies mentioned for 76mm and 127mm Weapon Systems have been ordered and scheduled to enter in service with new Patrol Ships, Cavour Aircraft Carrier, Horizon and FREMM Frigates of the Italian Navy.

3A Plus Programmable Fuze for 76mm Ammo

3A Plus provides 76mm Naval Guns with the capability to operate a unique Multi-Function Programmable Ammunition. This fuze, which is adaptable to most 76mm warheads and envisaged by the Italian Navy as to be integrated in pre-fragmented projectiles, is programmed immediately before firing. The 3A Plus Fuze operates in proximity, impact and time modes, and it can be programmed to perform the following 9 functions: Proximity Mode: Gated Proximity, Proximity with Impact Priority, Anti-Missile Proximity, Anti-Helo/Aircraft Proximity, Anti-Ship Proximiy. Impact Mode: Point Detonation, Delayed Detonation. Time Mode: Air  Burst (top picture), Point Saturation. The availability of so many operating functions with proven level of performance, largely superior to that of any other fuze, has been achieved using the most recent technologies in the area of miniaturized digital electronic and real-time processing. As per Navy's requirement, the 3AP fuze can operate in extreme EM environmental conditions, with dramatic improvement of effectiveness and significant reduction of collateral damages.

In Proximity Mode, which is the functioning mode that allows top performance against Sea-Skimming Missiles and manoeuvring surface targets, this fuze is totally insensitive to sea clutter: the activation range is approximately 10m even if the projectile is at around one meter from the sea surface. In similar operative conditions, any other fuze would either have a reduced activation range or require the selection of time activation: both possibilities would be detrimental to performances against maneuvering targets. A Digital Signal Processor discriminates target echo from sea clutter and a CPU optimises the fuze activation by computing the engagement kinematics according to the data received approaching the target, the latter  being detectable at about 100 m range. In Proximity Mode the 3AP Fuze combines insensitivity to sea clutter, smart computation of the best point of detonation and protection from EM environment. The result is a reduction of up to 80% in the number of rounds required to achieve a reference cumulative kill probability.

The 3AP Multi-Function Programmable Fuze is compatible to all in service 76 mm Compact and Super Rapid (SR) Guns by simply replacing the standard fuze setter with a new programming device. The OTO Melara 76/62 Super Rapid (SR) Guns installed on the new Fast Patrol Boats and Horizon Frigates of the Italian Navy as well as the 76/62 Super Rapid currently in production for the new FREMM Frigates and for some international Customers are configured to operate the 3AP Fuze. The fuze development has been completed with many live trials and several hundreds of projectiles have been fired in realistic scenarios, including bog-hammer-like vessels, according to the requirement of asymmetric warfare. A qualification of the fuze has been done according the applicable STANAGs and some thousands fuzes have been produced and delivered to Italian Navy and French Navy. The trials and the qualification on the 3AP Fuze have been carried out at the Italian Navy Proving Grounds and Laboratories. The results of said trials have been extremely successful, confirming the expected performance of the 3AP Fuze in any operational situation.

76mm DART Guided Munitions and STRALES Super Rapid (SR) Gun System

The DART (Driven Ammunition with  Reduced Time of Flight) Round is also equipped with a fuze of new-generation, which shares many commonalities with the 3AP Fuze. DART isa Guided Ammunition for OTO Melara 76mm Artilleries and represents the main components of the STRALES System: the latter has been conceived to defeat the next-generation of supersonic missiles according to the requirement of the Italian Navy for their future vessels. The Italian Navy has selected the STRALES System against Missile Systems based upon a rationale of better performance at a lower cost. Thanks to the unique sustained firing capability of the 76mm Gun, the STRALES System is extremely effective both against modern Anti-Ship Missiles and in ASuW,also when engaging multiple maneuvering targets. Besides DART, the other components of the STRALES System are a Guidance Radar Antenna with the associated electronic interface, and an adapted 76mm Gun.

DART is a Sub-Calibre Projectile with Canard Control Compatible to any 76mm Gun. DART is fully compatibleto any 76/62 Guns and it can be fired at maximum rate of fire. A guidance beam generated by an antenna placed on the Gun Mount within a protective shield guides DART to the target present point.Thanks to high muzzle velocity and low drag coefficient, DART reaches the target in very short time. The Guidance System directs a Radio Frequency Beam to the target according to data received by the Ship's Combat Management System and DART "rides the beam up to the target" irrespectively of target maneuvers. Additional technologies enabling for completely autonomous operation with respect to Ship's CMS are also under consideration. The Guidance System produces a modulated signal that sends information, including Fuze Programming, to an onboard receiver positioned in the rear section of the in-flight DART projectile.

Computerized Data Management of the signals received keeps DART in the centre of the RF channel aimed at the target, while the canard guidance device receives continuous course-correction data up until the target is reached and neutralized. DART approaches the target in a very short time respect to any other Anti-Missile System and its maneuverability - as confirmed by the trials - is up to four times higher than the maneuvering capacity of future missiles and more than ten times higher than today's missiles. A pre-fragmented warhead and a state-of-the-art Proximity Fuze further increase the effectiveness of the DART.

The STRALES Guidance Kit can be installed on the existing 76mm Guns and a Multi-Feeding System, available also as stand-alone product for standard 76mm ammunition, is recommended. The Multi-Feeding System allows to feed the 76mm Gun with different types of ready to fire rounds selectable in real-time according to the target, thus optimising cost-effectiveness.

STRALES has been successfully tested during trials performed at PISQ (Poligono Interforze Salto di Quirra) and onboard the Italian Navy Patrol Ship "Foscari", a vessel used as a test ship for the system live trials. DART was guided with the required and expected accuracy at the operative ranges. The results achieved have been regarded as an extremely important and decisive milestone for the STRALES programme, meaning the STRALES concept has been proved and validated and any technological risk associated to development minimised. The STRALES System operates in a modular and autonomous way: the information required from the ship is limited to target position and stabilisation data.

More than 500 DART Ammo have been produced in 2013 for its qualification. Some hundreds of DART have been produced to enter in service for Italian Navy and Colombian Navy as soon as the qualification ends. The STRALES  (Davide for the Italian Navy) System will be installed onboard the Italian Navy Cavour Aircraft Carrier, Horizon and FREMM Frigates.

Vulcano Family Ammunition & Vulcano Module

The technological experience matured with DART,especially in the domains of Aerodynamics and Guidance, gun hardening of electronic equipment, test procedures, miniaturization, has been scaled-up to Vulcano, an ammunition with larger calibre. Vulcano consists of a Family of  Ballistic Extended Range (BER) and Guided Long Range (GLR)  Ammunition, the guided one can be integrated in different terminal guidance configurations (IMU-GPS, SAL, IR). The role of Vulcano is  mainly for Fire Support or Shore Bombardment, other roles as  Anti-Ship or Anti -Aerial are possible. Vulcano Family covers 127mm and 76 mm Caliber for Naval Artillery as well as 155mm for Land Artillery Systems.

Development activities have been performed in the frame of a Project funded by the Italian Ministry of Defence with the participation of The Netherlands MoD, following the signature of Governmental MoUs. Also for this new family of ammunition the sub-calibre concept has been selected because of high muzzle velocity and low drag coefficient. While for the 76mm DART such two parameters are oriented to maneuverability and short time to target, the aim for the Vulcano is the Extended Range (ER) Capability, beyond 100 km. An additional requirement for Vulcano is the compatibility with the Standard OTO Melara 127 mm Naval Guns as well as with the new 127/64 LW. The geometries match the interfaces with in-service loading systems, and only minor modifications to the Gun Mount are required to install a fuze programmer for the new ammunition. The Vulcano Ammunition consists of a complete cartridge including Propelling Charge, Fin-Stabilised Projectile with different kinds of warheads, fuzes and guidance units. Vulcano warhead is currently Pre-Fragmented High Explosive, though future configurations can include Semi-Armour Piercing features as well. As mentioned, the Vulcano 127mm Propelling Charge is not stored separately from the projectile. The Vulcano Ammunition is a one piece cartridge, as the 76mm Ammunition.

For 127mm Naval Application, the programme foresees the development of the following versions of ammunition: BER - an Unguided Version with Programmable Fuze for Extended Range Shore Bombardment as well as Anti-Ship and Anti-Air Missions with intrinsic Multi-Role Performance; GLR IMU-GPS: Guided Version, equipped with IMU/GPS (Inertial Measurement Unit/Global Position System) with RF Sensor Fuze with altimetric, impact and delay impact programmable mode; GRL IMU-GPS IR: Guided version, equipped with IMU/GPS (Inertial Measurement Unit/Global Position System) with terminal homing guidance against infrared target with impact and delay impact programmable mode; and the  GLR IMU-GPS SAL: Guided version, equipped with IMU/GPS (Inertial Measurement Unit/Global Position System) with terminal homing guidance against target illuminated from cooperating forces, with impact and delay impact programmable mode.

The development activities of the Vulcano 127mm Naval BER are completed, the activities were performed within the framework of a multinational programme, OTO Melara is leading an industrial group involving Dutch companies (Thales Nederland, TNO) while funding is provided by the Italian MoD and by The Netherlands MoD). The firing trials performed during the development have demonstrated the capability to reach the range of 63 km for BER Ammo (with 127/64 Barrel).

Coming to progress of activities, BER Version of the ammunition is today at the beginning of the production for qualification purpose (more than 500 ammo foreseen by the end of 2014). The GLR Version is at the end of development, since the last year,  cooperation activities between the Italian and German MODs for Vulcano with Semi-Active-Laser (SAL) Terminal Guidance is active as well as an industrial agreement between OTO Melara and Diehl Defence for the development of the SAL Version of Vulcano.

Significant results have been achieved with GPS/IMU equipment, and several firing trials have been conducted demonstrating the survivability and functioning of miniaturized components as well as the correct functioning of the GPS receiver in both acquisition and tracking phases. Also the IR Seeker as well as the SAL Seeker  have been tested in several firings to assess their survivability as well as the capability to direct the projectile in the Terminal Guidance Mode. These tests represent an important milestone for the programme and an intrinsic growth potential, showing the possibility of the ammunition to host sensors that together with sophisticated imaging analysis techniques can provide ATR (Automatic Target Recognition) capability allowing target engagement in complex scenarios. The Vulcano Ammunition takes best advantage by being operated with OTO Melara 127/64 LW Naval Gun Mount because of very high rate of fire, 35 rounds per minute at any elevation. The 127/64 LW System is now in production for the FREMM Frigates programme. These Naval Guns will integrate a Vulcano module, which coordinates and manages Naval Fire Support in interaction and respect to the general operational scenario, integrated into the Network Centric Warfare (NCW) Global Environment. As well as for STRALES, the integration of Vulcano with the Ship's Combat Management System is straight forward as the operational software is concentrated into the Vulcano Module.

The Vulcano Family of ammunition is scheduled to enter into service for the Italian Navy and for the German Navy F125 Frigates, for which five 127/64 LW Vulcano Gun Systems are currently in production, by the time the new ships enter in service. Vulcano 76mm is the latest configuration that has been designed, this calibre has the same configuration of the big brother of course with a lower payload. Vulcano 76 will extend the capability of the 76  Artillery to engage also precision target at 40 km in Sea and Land, Vulcano 76 can be fired from a OTO Melara 76 mm Gun System with a multi-feeding capability.

Modern Warfare is evolving into very complex scenarios. New requirements emerge for Naval Artilleries that are now requested to ensure very challenging capabilities. Since the 1990s, OTO Melara has been focusing  upon ensuring effective solutions for any envisaged requirement, through a technological approach that encompasses Artillery Systems and Smart Ammunition.

In the area of 76mm Ammunition, the 3AP Smart Fuze is in production, while the STRALES System for DART Guided Projectiles is performing the final trials before being fully qualified. Successful results have so far been achieved with the Vulcano programme and the development is in line with the project schedule. The development activities of 3AP, STRALES and Vulcano are based on contracts funded by Italian MoD as per the requirements of Italian Navy. Orders for the production and integration of 3AP Fuze, STRALES and Vulcano have been issued for four classes of new vessels recently entered in service or currently in production for the Italian Navy. Solutions for the integration of 3AP Fuze, STRALES & Vulcano have been obtained in order to minimise the impact on the ship focusing on extended modularity, digitalisation, structural compactness, maximum flexibility for the interface to CMS.
