India’s Ministry of Defence (MoD) signed a contract with Airbus Defence and Space, Spain for acquisition of 56 C295MW Transport Aircraft for the Indian Air Force (IAF) on September 24th, 2021. The induction of Airbus C295MW Airlifters will be a significant step towards modernisation of the Transport Fleet of the Indian Air Force (IAF). It is a Transport Aircraft of 5-10 tonne capacity with contemporary technology that will replace the ageing Avro Transport Aircraft of IAF.

HENSOLDT Forges Ahead with the Development of Eurofighter Radar
The Eurofighter will be equipped with a New-Generation of Radar which will enhance the aircraft’s capabilities and survivability. In the Euroradar Consortium, the Sensor Solutions provider HENSOLDT is pressing ahead with the development of the Eurofighter’s new Captor-E Radar System. Following the successful acceptance test, HENSOLDT has now delivered the second Antenna ready for Series Production to Leonardo UK in Edinburgh. This means that the production of the so-called E-Scan Antenna can commence at the HENSOLDT site in Ulm/Germany according to plan. This paves the way for the delivery of the first Radar Systems as of mid-2019. As early as spring 2018, the radar has successfully completed two flight campaigns at British Aerospace Systems (BAES) in Warton and at Airbus Defence and Space in Manching and met the requirements of the Critical Design Review (CDR) exactly on schedule.


The Captor-E Radar is based on AESA (Active Electronically Scanned Array) Technology and will significantly enhance the performance of the Eurofighter. Electronic Beam Scanning combined with flexible radar resource management provide outstanding detection performance and ensure simultaneous Multi-Target Tracking, Missile Guidance and perception of the situation. The Eurofighter’s nose is larger than that of all the comparable fighters, which means that the antenna is much larger and consequently more powerful than that of competing aircraft. This, together with the ability to mechanically rotate the antenna with a larger angle of view, increases both the detection area and the field of regard in comparison with the AESA Radar Systems used by the competitors.


The further development of Radar Technology is one of the main focal points of the Sensor Specialist HENSOLDT. For this reason, HENSOLDT operates one of the largest cleanroom production lines for Radio-Frequency Components in Europe. HENSOLDT’s Radar Systems are deployed worldwide by Armed Forces, including the U.S. and German Navy, as well as at the Bases of the Canadian, Australian and German Air Force. The Eurofighter Radar is being developed by the Euroradar Consortium comprising Leonardo (Great Britain, Italy), Indra (Spain) and HENSOLDT (Germany). HENSOLDT Delivers Naval Radars to Norwegian Coast Guard
HENSOLDT, the leading independent Sensor Solutions supplier, will equip the new Arctic Coast Guard Vessels in the P6615 Programme of the Norwegian Coast Guard with the latest version of its TRS-3D Naval Radar and MSSR 2000 I IFF System. The TRS-3D and IFF Systems are currently in operation onboard the three “Nordkapp” Offshore Patrol Vessels. The systems will be decommissioned, Upgraded and then re-installed on the Arctic Coast Guard Vessels. Furthermore, the contract includes an option for the Upgrade of the TRS-3D and IFF Systems of the “Svalbard” Vessel.
Under a contract worth more than Euro 20M awarded by the Norwegian Defence Materiel Agency (NDMA), HENSOLDT will deliver three TRS-3D Radars including the latest Solid-State Technology and Signal Processing Software and will deliver them from 2021, in parallel to the building programme of the new vessels. The TRS-3D includes a Secondary Radar MSSR 2000 I for Identification-Friend-or-Foe (IFF). It operates all current IFF Modes, including the latest “Mode S / Mode 5” Standard, which is a precondition for Joint Operations with NATO and Allied Forces.

TRS-3D is a Three-Dimensional Multi-Mode Naval Radar for Air and Sea Surveillance. It includes the ability to correlate plots and tracks of targets with the MSSR 2000 I Identification System for Automatic Identification of Vessels and Aircraft, which is essential to avoid friendly fire and to establish a comprehensive situation picture. It is used for automatically locating and tracking all types of Air and Sea targets and safe guidance of on-board Helicopters. Thanks to its Signal Processing Technologies, the TRS-3D is particularly suited for the Early Detection of low flying or slow moving objects under extreme environmental conditions.


More than 50 Units of the radar are in operation with Naval Forces around the world. Among the Ships equipped are Frigates and Corvettes of the German Navy, the U.S. Coast Guard National Security Cutters and the "Squadron 2000" Patrol Boats of the Finnish Navy.


Successful Flight Tests with HENSOLDT's Collision Warning Radar for UAVs
The Sensor Solutions provider HENSOLDT has successfully concluded flight tests with its Collision Avoidance Radar System for UAVs. This Sensor is intended to improve safety in both Military and Civilian Air Traffic.


HENSOLDT has developed a demonstrator of a so-called Detect-and-Avoid Radar System, which uses the latest radar technology to detect objects in the flight path of a UAV and to give Early Warning of any threat of collision following precise evaluation of the flight direction. At the same time, the sensor also assumes all the functions of a Weather Radar System.


In the flight tests, which were carried out on behalf of the German Procurement Authority BAAINBw and in collaboration with the German Aerospace Center (DLR) in Brunswick, the radar demonstrated its capabilities in a real setting, thus confirming the results previously achieved in ground tests. In test flights lasting several hours, the radar installed in a Dornier Do 228 belonging to the DLR reliably detected the test aircraft approaching at different altitudes and angles.
The Detect-and-Avoid Radar System uses state-of-the-art AESA technology (Active Electronically Scanned Array), which allows several detection tasks to be carried out at the same time and enables objects to be detected extremely fast. It replaces the pilot's visual assessment of the situation. Thanks to its excellent detection capabilities, the Multi-Function Radar is equally suitable for both Military and Civilian UAVs, e.g. for the delivery of cargo. A second series of flight tests is planned for the coming year.

HENSOLDT IFF Testers for French Armed Forces
HENSOLDT, the leading independent Sensor Solutions house, is delivering its test equipment used to ensure the correct performance of Identification Systems onboard Aircraft and Ships to the French Ministry for the Armed Forces.
The contract worth several million Euros covers the delivery of 130 BTI1000I IFF Testers (IFF = Identification-Friend-or-Foe) compatible with the Military and Civilian Mark XIIAS Standard which are essential to make sure that IFF Systems are working correctly before a Military Aircraft or Ship is going on a Mission. IFF Systems, so-called Secondary Surveillance Radars (SSR), precisely identify Ships and Aircraft by automatically sending Interrogation Signals, which are answered by so-called Transponders on-board friendly Aircraft or Ships. Thus, IFF enables Field Commanders to quickly distinguish friendly from hostile Forces and therefore avoid friendly fire.


HENSOLDT’s BTI1000I IFF Testers have been qualified by DGA (the French Defence Procurement Agency) in 2017. End of 2017, the testers gave proof of their capabilities during the U.S. Army’s “Bold Quest” Interoperability Exercises in Savannah/Georgia. They are under contract by several Platform Integrator Companies and in service with the Armed Forces of Germany, Norway, Denmark and Australia.


HENSOLDT supplies customers all over the world with IFF Equipment. Based on the experience of predecessor companies like Matra, Airbus and Siemens, the company is under contract to upgrade German, French, U.S. and other Armed Forces’ platforms with IFF Systems using the latest ‘Mode 5’ Standard. It has already delivered IFF Systems – including Crypto Devices - to Ground and Naval Platforms of 42 NATO and NATO-Allied Nations. In France, the company’s equipment is deployed on the Charles de Gaulle Aircraft Carrier, the Rafale and Mirage 2000 Combat Aircraft, the NH90 Helicopters and several Air Defence Platforms. HENSOLDT Modernising Austrian Air Traffic Control Systems
The Sensor Solutions provider HENSOLDT will modernise the Austro Control Surveillance landscape in Austria. The contract awarded includes the delivery of two High-Performance Radar Systems, which guarantee not only reliable detection offered by the new “Mode S” Air Traffic Control Standard, but also safe management of Air Traffic even in the “Radar Shadow” of wind farms. If you take into account the Radar Systems already delivered, HENSOLDT has now equipped the entire Surveillance landscape in Austria.


“Austro Control’s order confirms our market position as one of the leading suppliers of Air Traffic Control Equipment in Europe,” said HENSOLDT’s CEO Thomas Müller. “Our Radar Systems provide top performances in the fields of Military and Civilian Air Traffic Control and Air Surveillance and ensure that people can travel with the greatest amount of safety possible.” HENSOLDT will supply Austro Control with an ASR-NG Combined Primary/Secondary Radar and a standalone MSSR 2000 I Secondary Radar, which will be deployed at Vienna International Airport and in the Air Traffic Control System at the top of Feichtberg Hill in Upper Austria. The Primary Radar helps to identify objects such as small aircraft that do not identify themselves using their own Transponder Signals. It includes a special Signal Processing Technology for Wide-Area Air Surveillance and 3D Capability. The Radar System’s exceptionally long range of 120 NM and outstanding capability to detect objects at an altitude of up to 50,000 ft allow the system to cover a volume four times as large as can be achieved with ASR Units from competitors.


The MSSR 2000 I Secondary Radar guarantees Automatic Identification of Aircraft emitting their own Transponder Signals. It meets the new “Mode S” and “ADS-B” Air Traffic Control Standards, which further improve Aircraft Identification queries and are currently being introduced in the Central European Airspace. HENSOLDT has already supplied Secondary Radar Systems for the Air Traffic Control Systems at Vienna International Airport and on the Koralpe Mountain in Kärnten, Austria.


HENSOLDT Equips Canadian Airfields with High-Performance Airport Surveillance Radars
With the Site Acceptance Test (SAT) for the last unit in Greenwood, Nova Scotia, completed, HENSOLDT has equipped a total of six Military Airfields in Canada with state-of-the-art Airport Surveillance Radars. In addition to these, a Training System has also been successfully installed in Canada. This successfully completes the Installation Phase for the Euro 50M order, which was awarded to HENSOLDT in 2013.


The programme comprises the delivery of seven Radar Systems and two Spare Parts packages. In a similar way to previous systems, the Radar in Greenwood was also handed over to the customer by a team comprising representatives from the Canadian Department of National Defence (DND) and from HENSOLDT's local partner Lockheed Martin Canada (LMC).


The ASR Radars consist of an Integrated Primary and Secondary Radar System each. The Primary Radar helps to detect non-cooperative objects such as small aircraft without Transponders or hostile aircraft. It is based on a Semi-Conductor Transmitter and includes special Signal Processing techniques for Wide-Area Surveillance and windfarm mitigation. The Secondary Radar, MSSR 2000 I, provides Automatic Identification of cooperative aircraft. It meets the new "Mode S/Mode 5" Air Traffic Control Standard, which greatly improves Aircraft Identification queries and is currently being introduced in all NATO and Allied Forces.


HENSOLDT supplies customers all over the world with Air Traffic Control and Identification Systems for Military and Civilian applications. Amongst others, the company has equipped the German Armed Forces' Airfields with the ASR-S (Airport Surveillance Radar, S-Band) Airport Surveillance Radar and is delivering a complete approach Control System for the Military Airfields in Switzerland. Different versions of its new ASR-NG Radar are under contract by Australia and the UK. The MSSR 2000 I Secondary Radar is deployed for Military Friend-or-Foe Identification by the Naval Forces of Germany, France, Norway and Finland.


HENSOLDT Cooperates with BIRD Aerosystems to Develop the Control Interface of HENSOLDT's PrecISR Multi-Mode Radar Family Using their RCD & MSIS
HENSOLDT, a global pioneer of Technology and Innovation in the area of Defence and Security Electronics, and BIRD Aerosystems, the leading developer of Airborne Missile Protection Systems (AMPS) and Airborne Surveillance, Information and Observation (ASIO) Solutions, have signed a cooperation agreement which includes the integration of HENSOLDT's new PrecISR Advanced Multi-Mode Radar Family with BIRD Aerosystems' operationally proven Radar Control and Display (RCD) System and BIRD's Mission Management System (MSIS).


As a part of this joint programme, BIRD Aerosystems will adapt their RCD to control and manage HENSOLDT's advanced PrecISR1000 Radar. Furthermore, the data from the Radar will be collected and processed by BIRD's MSIS, which will automatically classify, prioritise and display the information gathered from the Radar along with additional information from the other onboard sensors using state of the art Algorithms with an easy to use and intuitive Human-Machine Interface.


The PrecISR, HENSOLDT's new Family of Airborne Multi-Mission Surveillance Radars, comprises of the newest generation Gallium Nitride AESA Antenna Technology with Two-Dimensional E-Scan capability, combined with large bandwidth multi-channel Radar Core Electronics and Integrated Radar Signal Processing. PrecISR has been designed for all types of Airborne Surveillance Missions in 24/7 operation and in all-weather conditions, to ensure safety and security and to detect conventional and asymmetric threats on the Ground, at Sea and in the Air. Detecting, tracking and classifying more than a thousand objects, the PrecISR increases the Surveillance capabilities and mission efficiency for any Special Mission Aircraft.


BIRD's RCD (Radar Control Device) is integrated into BIRD's advanced Mission Management System (MSIS), which manages the complete mission and enables ASIO Airborne, Naval and Ground Units to share real-time information. BIRD's MSIS reduces mission crew workload by display and operation of important aspects of the mission at any given time, enabling the crew to efficiently perform detection and classification of only the relevant targets.
