Transformative Technologies: How Raytheon Technologies Is Shaping the Future
The merger of Raytheon and United Technologies combined two companies with distinctive legacies in transformative technologies – breaking barriers, designing unique solutions and reimagining the possible. Raytheon Technologies will continue building on that history as it shapes the future of Air travel, Global Defence and Space Exploration. Throughout its history of confronting the world’s most daunting challenges, with a heritage of developing the Radars and Aircraft Engines that helped the Allies prevail in World War-II; the computer that guided Apollo 11 to the Moon; and the Environmental Satellite Systems that generate detailed information on severe weather events. RTX Transformative Technologies have resulted in era-defining achievements, including the pioneering use of Gallium Nitride (GaN), the deployment of increasingly sophisticated Military Radars and Defence Systems, and the development of advanced materials for Aircraft Weight Reduction.
Artificial Intelligence and its Machine Learning subset are assuming major roles in helping Raytheon Technologies’ customers solve complex problems. AI refers to any adaptable system that will respond to a human request, while Machine Learning is a set of algorithms that can be used to gain deeper insights into data. AI and Machine Learning have many functions, including Command & Control; Aircraft Support; Robotics; Speech Translation and Media Processing; Training, and Design Operation. These technologies must be explainable and trustworthy as they enhance the speed and accuracy of all processes, products and systems, increasing the efficiency of Aftermarket Operations. One real-world example is Intelligent Maintenance and Operations, by creating sophisticated algorithms that can predict when an Airplane Engine Part needs to be replaced before it wears out or breaks down, increasing efficiency and safety. Another example is its Multi-INT Data Processing Systems. An Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) can collect hundreds of thousands of hours of video in search of Explosive Devices, while reviewing this massive amount of footage is impossible for humans, but not for a machine trained to identify those devices.
Cyber Security: Every modern system, from individual Sensors and Jet Engines to vast Connected Eco-systems, is susceptible to Cyber-Attacks. As Defence and Commercial Aviation Systems have become more highly Connected, Autonomous and Electrical and as the threats against these systems have become more sophisticated Cyber Security needs have increased. The Raytheon CODE Center is used to test Networks, Systems & Platforms by exposing them to realistic, Nation-State Cyber, Anti-Tamper and Radio Frequency attacks. The Center can also replicate various Networked environments and Cyber-Physical Systems, including Air Traffic Control, Power Grids, water supplies, Missiles, Radars and Security Operations Centers. When testing is complete, the CODE Center Team of Cyber Experts develops technologies, processes and Software to deliver field-proven and Mission-reliable Cyber Solutions. With constant Innovation in Cyber-Security, it builds World-Class Cyber Security Capabilities.
Year Reviewed at Raytheon Technologies
2020 was the year Raytheon Technologies got to work. The inaugural year story is one best told by its Innovation in Transforming the Technologies of Aerospace and Defence. Creating the Future of Aerospace and Defence, Raytheon Technologies began with the creation of the company itself. Raytheon Technologies formed in April, bringing together four businesses and approximately 200,000 employees for a clear and singular purpose: to create the Future of Aerospace and Defence. The new company, with more than 190 years of combined experience, is already building on that history, with Transformative Technologies that are making the world Safer, Smarter and better Connected.
Making Flying Safer and More Sustainable: 2020 was a tough year for Aviation. To support the Industry, Collins Aerospace leadership articulated a plan for its recovery, both in the short term and the long term. Collins also worked with Commercial Aviation Companies to improve Flight Safety for those still traveling today, including a new Phone App that uses Quick Response (QR) Codes to eliminate the need to touch Airport Kiosks.
Planning for the future, Collins and Raytheon Intelligence & Space are also teaming up to pursue a U.S. Federal Aviation Administration contract to overhaul the Agency’s Telecommunications Infrastructure – an update that could drastically improve Aviation for everyone from pilots to passengers.
Smarter Defence: Raytheon Technologies’ Defence Capabilities took big steps forward in 2020. In November, a Raytheon Missiles & Defense-built Interceptor known as the SM-3 had a successful and historic test off the coast of Hawaii, making its first-ever Intercept of a Simulated Ballistic Missile. Sensors from Raytheon Intelligence & Space were also part of the test, working from Low-Earth Orbit to detect & track the target, then relay the decision to decision-makers in a demonstration of what’s known as “Space-Based Early Warning.”
Pratt & Whitney
Pratt & Whitney, a Unit of Raytheon Technologies is a world leader in the Design, Manufacture and Service of Aircraft and Helicopter Engines, and Auxiliary Power Units. Raytheon Technologies Corporation is an Aerospace and Defence Company that provides Advanced Systems and Services for Commercial, Military and Government customers worldwide.
Pratt & Whitney’s Combat-proven F135 is the most advanced Operational Fighter Engine in the world, which powers the formidable Lockheed Martin F-35 5th-Generation Fighter, delivering 26% more thrust, 116% more powered lift, and more than a 300% increase in Power and Thermal Management over 4th-Generation Fighter Engines, all with a demonstrated Mission Capability rate of above 94%.
Advanced Propulsion gets you where you need to go — faster, more safely and with great sensitivity to the environment. The integration of Raytheon and United Technologies advanced those objectives, specifically in developing Revolutionary Engine Architectures and Technologies that give top priority to efficiency and climate mitigation. At Pratt & Whitney, it is about how to increase the performance of its Engines and create a Greener environment. Pratt & Whitney introduced the Geared Turbofan Engine (GTF), which offers double-digit improvements in fuel consumption, environmental emissions, engine noise and operating costs.
Those same expectations of performance and sustainability drive P&W’s current research. As Governments around the world place greater restrictions on emissions and noise, and as customers require aircraft that can travel greater distances - new, disruptive technologies will be required, including Hypersonic, Hybrid-Electric, Multi-Megawatt Electric, and Rotating Detonation Engines. P&W is also working on Small, Expendable Engines that could revolutionise Air Power.
The merger of United Technologies and Raytheon could create new opportunities in bringing together, for example, Aircraft and Environmental Control Systems with Missile Systems and Sensors. The result can be Future Systems that solve customers’ challenges before they face them. At Pratt & Whitney, the future of environmentally sustainable flight continued to take shape as the business worked on new models of the Geared Turbofan Engine - a quieter, more efficient and cleaner alternative to Conventional Jet Engines.
