The Singapore Air Show 2022 was held at Changi Exhibition Centre from 15th to 18th February 2022, with attendance from few high-level Military Delegations including Senior Government Officials and leading industry players, featured about 600 exhibiting companies from about 40 countries. The Singapore Air Show had fewer participants in the Civil and Military Flying and Static Aircraft Displays that included the IAF’s LCA Tejas Mk.1 Fighter Jet, Airbus A400M, Dassault Aviation Falcon Business Jets, Embraer Profit-Hunter Commuter Jet, Lockheed Martin’s F-35, F-16D & F-22, with Sikorsky’s S-70B, Boeing’s F-15SG & P-8A Poseidon, Bell Boeing MV-22s, Elbit Systems’ Hermes 450 UAS, IAI Heron TP UAS, with Bell Helicopters on display.

Singapore Airshow 2022 Spotlights Sustainability and Catalyses Recovery for Aviation Industry
Singapore Airshow 2022 kicked-off with strong optimism for industry recovery and a focus on sustainability. The biennial event saw Aviation’s finest gather from all around the world at the Changi Exhibition Centre from 15th to 18th February. This Edition had about 13,000 trade attendees and almost 600 participating companies from more than 39 countries/regions; representing more than 70% of the Top 20 Global Aerospace Companies.
Singapore Airshow 2022 was officially opened by the Minister for Defence, Dr Ng Eng Hen and Minister for Transport and Minister-in-charge of Trade Relations, S. Iswaran, at the Changi Exhibition Centre, Singapore.
“We are heartened by the support and participation of the most influential Aerospace and Defence Companies worldwide. Their presence displays the industry’s resilience and confidence for blue skies ahead,” said Leck Chet Lam, Managing Director, Experia, organiser of Singapore Airshow 2022. “The stage is set for strategic conversations, exchange of ideas and significant partnerships that will catalyse the recovery of the industry in Asia.”
The biennial Singapore Airshow is Asia’s most influential International Aerospace and Defence Exhibition for stakeholders to forge strategic alliances, collaborate for change to shape the future of the Global Aviation Industry.
“The Aviation Industry has proven its resilience by overcoming numerous obstacles over the years. The presence of major exhibitors, partners and trade attendees is evidence of the collective optimism for recovery,” said Leck Chet Lam, Managing Director of Experia, organiser of Singapore Airshow 2022. “We are proud to be rolling-out the red carpet for critical conversations, Strategic Partnerships and new ideas that will catalyse the Transformation and rebound of the Aerospace and Defence Sector.”
Singapore Airshow had also adopted sustainability efforts by going largely paperless – which is atypical of Airshows. The traditionally printed Show Directory has evolved into an electronic format, and online platforms such as a Digital Media Centre have been created to minimise printing. The event was also powered by solar energy generated from 15,000 panels installed on the roof of the Changi Exhibition Centre.
A key event in the Global Aviation calendar, Singapore Airshow 2022 included an exhibition, by-invite-only forums, flying displays and static displays. Key participating exhibitors includedAirbus, Bell, Boeing, Collins Aerospace, Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China, Gulfstream, Honeywell, Israel Aerospace Industries, Leonardo, Lockheed Martin, Rolls-Royce, ST Engineering and Textron Aviation.
With COVID disrupting global economies, recovery is key in every leader's agenda. Together with FlightGlobal, Singapore Airshow 2022's Aviation CEO Forum brought together Aviation Industry leaders to discuss the industry's recovery, business resilience, balance sheet rebuilding and network and fleet development.
The Aviation Industry is confronted with an urgency to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050. In the Sustainable Aviation Forum, held in partnership with Alton Aviation Consultancy, participants deep-dived into the challenges and opportunities within sustainable aviation. This included project trials, technological innovations, and collaborations in Research and Development.
Breath-taking Aerial Displays
Singapore Airshow 2022 would not be complete without the Aerial Display participants performing their dramatic stunts and manoeuvres. Attendees were treated to Flying Displays and flypasts from four Air Forces and two commercial companies. Members of the public could also catch the action from the comfort and safety of their homes via the livestream or Singapore Airshow’s Official Facebook page.
Appearing in Singapore Airshow for the first time was the Indian Air Force’s Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) – Tejas Mk.1.
Returning to perform since the 2018 edition was Indonesia’s Jupiter Aerobatic Team, which thrilled audiences with a six-plane repertoire. The line-up of Flying Displays also included the Republic of Singapore Air Force’s F-16C and AH-64D Apache Attack Helicopters, as well as the F-35B Joint Strike Fighter and B-52 Stratofortress from the United States Marine Corps and United States Air Force, respectively. Airbus’ A350-1000 and Boeing’s Wide-bodied B777-9 also conducted flypasts.
To pave the way for the safe and calibrated resumption of larger Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) events in 2022, Singapore Airshow 2022 was identified as one of the MICE pilot events to trial new protocols, including a higher event capacity and daily COVID testing, to move towards a strong footing for recovery.
“We are excited that Singapore Airshow 2022 was able to proceed and are thankful for the collaborative efforts with authorities in upholding our attendees’ safety with highest priority,” Mr Leck commented. “All attendees will have to be pre-registered, fully-vaccinated with the World Health Organisation Emergency Use Listing (WHO EUL) vaccines and adhere to the prevailing safe management measures. These include mandatory mask-wearing, safe distancing protocols, designated food and beverage zones and regular disinfection of event spaces.”
With Singapore gradually reopening its borders, including through Vaccinated Travel Lanes (VTL) for travellers from more than 20 countries, key industry players like Airbus, Aviation Industry Corporation of China, Bell, Boeing, Eaton Corporation, Israel Aerospace Industries, L3Harris, Leonardo, Lockheed Martin, Pratt & Whitney, Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, Rolls-Royce, Safran, ST Engineering, Thales, and Turkish Aerospace continue to ink their support and participation at Singapore Airshow 2022. New exhibitors representing a wide spectrum of Aerospace and Defence products such as Avnon Group from Israel, Diethelm Keller Aviation from Switzerland, Essentium from USA, Shell Aviation from Singapore and Volocopter from Germany, which also participated at the show.
To create a memorable experience for all attendees, Singapore Airshow 2022 had partnered with Klook, a world leading travel activities and services booking platform, to provide exclusive deals in dining, leisure, cultural activities. AeroPerks, Singapore Airshow’s proprietary privilege programme, has been extended beyond Singapore Airshow attendees to include associates in Singapore’s Aerospace Sector. While there were no public days, Singapore Airshow 2022 continued to engage with its fans through AeroQuiz – a trivia quiz opened to all Singapore residents.

As Asia's largest Airshow, this was the place to be for leading Aerospace companies and budding players eager to make their mark in the International Aerospace and Defence market.
This Singapore Airshow may be slow when measured in numbers, but it is not short of quality. The Daily Flying Display continued to wow the crowds, be it with the strong presence of large Commercial Aircraft or the agility of their Military counterparts. Among the latter, the Indonesian Air Force's Juniper Aerobatic Team made the most of the scenic background the Straits of Johor provided.
Aviation CEO Forum
The recovery of the Aviation Industry was another topic that took centre-stage at this year’s Airshow. Top executives from Avolon, BOC Aviation, CFM International, Malaysia Airlines and Rex Airlines, discussed and debated the pace of market recovery, business resilience and sustainable Aviation Solutions at the “Aviation CEO Forum”. Organised in association with FlightGlobal, this platform presented thought leaders the opportunity to exchange views on the optimism in Asia Pacific’s projected growth and how industry players can link arms to build a better future.

Key Takeaways - Forum Panellists were optimistic traffic will resume strongly when travel restrictions are removed. Government support is required to reduce and remove travel restrictions. Sustainable Aviation Forum
In line with the global agenda on climate change, Singapore Airshow 2022 had partnered with Alton Aviation Consultancy to present the inaugural “Sustainable Aviation Forum” on 16th and 17th February. Experts from Public and Private Sectors discussed challenges and opportunities within Sustainable Aviation, including the topic of “Sustainability of Future Technology in Areas of Air Mobility and Aviation Operations”. Focus areas included the roles of regulators, innovations in Engine Technology, sustainable Aviation Fuel, and Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO).

LCA Tejas Participates at Singapore Air Show
A 44 member contingent of the Indian Air Force was at the Changi International Airport in Singapore to participate in the Singapore Airshow 2022, a biennial event which provides a platform for the Global Aviation Industry to showcase their products.
IAF was pitching the indigenous Tejas Mk.1 aircraft alongside participants from across the world. The Tejas Light Fighter Aircraft enthralled the audience with its display of low-level Aerobatics, displaying its superior handling characteristics and maneuverability. The participation of Indian Air Force in the Air Show provided India with the opportunity to showcase the LCA Tejas Aircraft and to interact with counterparts from RSAF (Royal Singapore Air Force) & other participating contingents.
In the past, Indian Air Force had participated in similar Air Shows like LIMA 2019 in Malaysia and Dubai Air Show 2021 to exhibit indigenous aircraft and Formation Aerobatic Teams.
With IAF taking the LCA Tejas to the Singapore Airshow, there are more Asean countries getting interested in the LCA. For the IAF, this show gave an opportunity to interact with other participants. Even as India awaits a final response from Malaysia which is in the midst of taking a decision regarding a low-cost Fighter Jet for its Air Force, later next month, the Indian Air Force (IAF) will fly the indigenous Light Combat AirCraft (LCA) `Tejas’ MK-I at the Singapore AirShow.
This airshow, considered to be amongst the top amongst the Asean countries, provides a platform for the Global Aviation industry to showcase their products.
The indigenous LCA Tejas presented low-level Aerobatics, displaying its superior handling characteristics as well as manoeuvrability. The show was the best platform to display the Made in India low cost fighter jet to the world. The Asean member countries are looking towards India for low cost platforms. With the successful firming up of the BrahMos Missile deal with the Philippines recently, and Malaysia in the process of announcing its decision next month, there is a lot of interest in this aircraft.
In the past, the IAF had participated in similar Air Shows like Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (LIMA) in 2019 in Malaysia and Dubai Air Show 2021 and had showcased the indigenous Light Combat Aircraft as well as IAF’s formation aerobatic teams. The first international unveiling of LCA was at the Bahrain International Air Show in 2016. And in 2019, the RMAF (Royal Malaysian Air Force) had expressed interest in the LCA when the aircraft had participated for the first time in LIMA.
Malaysia’s interest in LCA: As has been reported earlier, Malaysia is looking for 36 low-cost fighter jets for its own Air Force. In early 2021, the Government of that country had floated a Request for Proposal and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) had responded and an evaluation process is still going on.
Leonardo of Italy has floated the M-346FA Fighter Attack Aircraft Variant; Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) has responded too and is floating FA-50 Light Attack Fighter; United Aircraft Corporation of Russia has the Yak-130 Combat Trainer; and JF-17 of China.

Embraer’s TechShark E190-E2 Premieres at the Singapore Airshow 2022
Embraer senior executives Arjan Meijer, President & CEO of Embraer Commercial Aviation and Raul Villaron, Vice President, Asia Pacific of Embraer Commercial Aviation introduced the Embraer E190-E2 TechShark Livery. The E190-E2 is the world’s quietest, cleanest and most efficient new-generation single-aisle aircraft. Embraer’s digital predator design, The TechShark, was premiered at the Singapore Airshow. The eye-catching effect on Embraer’s E190-E2 was specially produced for the Singapore Airshow and was a popular attraction at the event.
The E190-E2 (call sign 2-RLET) departed Embraer’s headquarters in São José dos Campos, Brazil on 9th February 2022, and landed at Singapore’s Changi Airport on 12th February 2022.
The E190-E2, part of Embraer’s E2 Family of advanced jets, is dubbed the ‘Profit Hunter’ because of its high performance and low fuel burn. It delivers the lowest operating costs and highest yields for Airlines, more comfort for passengers and space for their bags, smallest noise footprint and less impact on the environment.
“Since we last gathered in Singapore in February 2020, our industry has been challenged like never before, and responded with incredible resilience. This event comes at a key moment for our industry as we tackle critical challenges – enabling Airlines to reposition themselves for better growth and the environment,” said Arjan Meijer, President and CEO Embraer Commercial Aviation.
“We forecast that Asia Pacific, including China, requires more than 3,000 aircraft under 150 seats in the next 20 years,” says Raul Villaron, Asia Pacific Vice President for Embraer Commercial Aviation. “Crossover jets like the E-Jets E2 and the First-Generation E-Jets play an essential role in enabling Airlines to open, develop, and grow their networks profitably. The Airlines that incorporate these jets into their strategy are also able to adapt dynamically to fluctuations in market demand and capacity needs, while protecting the bottom line.”
Embraer is committed to developing products, solutions and technologies to contribute to the Aviation Industry’s goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2050. Embraer aims to be carbon neutral by 2040 and achieve carbon neutral growth from 2022. It plans to implement 25% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) use in its operations by 2040 and 100% renewable energy sources by 2030.
The company has a recognised track record of innovation in sustainable fuels, which includes the industry's first certified ethanol-powered aircraft in 2004. Working closely with its customers and partners, the company has been continually enhancing the efficiency and performance of its current and future products. The E2 Family of jets, for example, is targeted to be compatible with 100% SAF before 2030.

Airbus Showcases its Latest Products and Sustainable Aerospace Ambition at Singapore Airshow 2022
Airbus was one of the largest exhibitors at the Singapore Airshow, showcasing its latest products, services and its commitment to Sustainable Aerospace. Taking centre-stage during the flying display was the Long-Range A350-1000. It is the only clean sheet design aircraft in the large widebody category, featuring state-of-the-art technologies and aerodynamics; delivering unmatched standards and comfort.
At the static display, Airbus had four aircraft at the show in customer configurations. From the Commercial Aircraft product line, visitors were able to get up close to a Singapore Airlines A350-900, a Cebu Pacific A330neo and a Korean Air A220. From the Military segment, a German Air Force A400M was also part of the display.
In addition, at the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) static display, visitors were able to see an A330 MRTT (Multi-Role Tanker Transport) and, for the first time at this Air Show, its new Airbus H225M Multi-Role Helicopter.
In the main hall, visitors to the Airbus exhibit were able to obtain information about the company’s full range of products and services. On display were large-scale models of the A350-1000, A400M and C295, H145 and H175 Helicopters, as well as the Pleiades Neo Earth Observation Satellite.
The Airbus Stand also featured a dedicated area to showcase Airbus’ ambition to pioneer Sustainable Aerospace. On display were models of the ZEROe Hydrogen-powered Concept Aircraft that represents the company’s ambition to put the first Zero-Emissions Airliner in service by 2035.
During the week at Singapore Airshow, Airbus organised a series of media briefings covering the Commercial Aircraft, Helicopters, and Defence and Space businesses.
Rafael At Singapore Air Show 2022

These systems were elaborately displayed during the show.
Rafael showcased the SPYDER All-in-One Air Defence System. SPYDER is a quick reaction, lower-tier Air Defence System, designed to counter enemy aircraft, bombs, UAV's, and Precision-Guided Munitions. It provides effective protection of valuable assets, as well as first-class defence for Manoeuvreing Forces. By incorporating an Integrated Radar, Toplite EO/IR Sensor and Missile Launcher onto a single platform, the All-in-One SPYDER can address a Defence Force’s individualised, operational needs. The SPYDER Air Defence System is the only Israeli-made Air Defence System acquired by a NATO Member State.
Elbit Systems Showcased Hybrid Propulsion Small Tactical UAS at Singapore Airshow 2022
Elbit Systems presented the Skylark 3 Hybrid Small Tactical Unmanned Aerial Systems (STUAS) for the first time at the Singapore Airshow 2022 in the Israel Pavilion. The Skylark3 Hybrid is equipped with a Hybrid Propulsion System, both an electric and an internal combustion engine, tripling endurance and offering up to 18 hours of operations, with no change to size or weight, significantly increasing mission effectiveness and cost efficiency.
The Skylark3 Hybrid uses its combustion engine to fly rapidly to the Area Of Interest (AOI) and switches to the electrical engine while operating above the AOI. The twin engine architecture of the new Skylark enables one to back up the other, providing greater reliability and safety. The significantly higher endurance of the Skylark 3 Hybrid provides forces with greater capacity to hover above AOI and requires fewer platforms to execute the same mission.
Skylark 3 Hybrid is based on the Skylark Family of STUAS that have been ordered by 27 countries, to date. Skylark 3 Hybrid has a 4.7m wingspan, a maximum take-off weight of 50kg, service ceiling of 12,000ft and a range of 120km. It features dual payload capacity with a “plug and play” interface for a quick replacement of sensors in the field. The Skylark 3 Hybrid is capable of integrating a range of payloads including high-resolution Electro-Optical gimbaled payload, ELINT, COMINT, Laser Designators and others. It is deployed and operated by a crew of two, launched via a Pneumatic Launcher and can be mounted on a vehicle or vessel. Two Skylark 3 Hybrid STUAS can be assigned to the same mission simultaneously managed by a shared Ground Control Station.
Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) at Singapore Airshow 2022
For the first time, IAI displayed the advanced Surface-to-Surface Missile System, BLUE SPEAR (5G SSM), amongst other cutting-edge technologies.
Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), a world-class Aerospace and Defence Company exhibited again at the Singapore Airshow. As one of Asia’s most influential Defence Exhibitions, the Singapore Airshow provided IAI with an opportunity to showcase its state-of-the-art technologies in the hub of the East, while broadening new and existing partnerships with Asian and other Global Partners.
IAI showcased a variety of its holistic Systems-of-Systems, emphasising its Naval and Aviation Capabilities. IAI presented its Advanced Integrated Solution for aerial threats – the BARAK-LRAD and BARAK-ER Air and Missile Defence Systems. IAI also exhibited its Multi-Function Naval Radar MF-STAR, alongside the Surface-to-Surface Missile System BLUE SPEAR (5G SSM), co-developed by IAI and Singapore’s ST Engineering, marketed and sold by Proteus Advanced Systems.
In addition, IAI showcases its Long-Range Multi-Role Maritime Surveillance Solution, the MPA (Maritime Patrol Aircraft) as well as unique UAS capabilities with the ThunderB VTOL, developed by IAI subsidiary BlueBird Aero Structures. Further, IAI’s Advanced Tactical Loitering Munition Mini Harpy, designed for both Field and Marine Units, was on display.
In the Civilian Sphere, IAI displayed its industry-leading B777 Passenger-to-Freighter Conversions, among other solutions and capabilities.

For the first time, Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) displayed the cutting-edge BLUE SPEAR (5G SSM) Surface-to-Surface Missile. The System, co-developed with Singapore’s leading Defence Company ST Engineering and marketed by Joint Venture Company Proteus Advanced Systems, highlights the companies’ superior capabilities in both Naval and Air Defence. Marking an important moment for IAI and its Partners, the BLUE SPEAR (5G SSM) appeared on display for the first time at IAI’s Stand at one of Asia’s most influential Defence Exhibitions, the Singapore Airshow 2022.

The IAI BLUE SPEAR (5G SSM) System is an advanced member of the Next-Generation Surface-to-Surface Missile System that is built on the battle-proven Gabriel Missile Family heritage. This Missile System delivers an agile, highly penetrative, combined Anti-Ship and Land-Attack Capability with a range of 290 km at high sub-sonic speed.
It deploys a state-of-the-art Radar Seeker and advanced Weapon Control System to provide precise target detection and engagement. It can operate under all-weather conditions, during both day and night. It has beyond the Line-of-Sight Strike Capabilities against both mobile and stationary targets, and offers both Sea-based and Land-based Launch options.
Against Countermeasures of increasing sophistication, the missile is able to locate and attack its target in littoral, open-ocean and over land environments, and is especially designed to prevail in contested, congested and complex situations. The BLUE SPEAR (5G SSM) also offers significant Military Off-the-Shelf Solution (MOTS) advantages in terms of cost, time-to-procurement, entry into operational service, and risk reduction.
