DSA Showed Malaysia is Back in Business
The 17th Edition of DSA & 2nd NATSEC 2022 gave a signal to the world that Malaysia is ready and open for business, once again. “Despite all odds due to the pandemic we are back with one of the leading Defence and Security Shows in the world. This show sends a strong signal to the world that Malaysia is open for business and is the ideal destination for investments and trade – a much-needed catalyst to spur and contribute to our recovery efforts,” Malaysia’s Senior Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said.

“After successfully running for more than three decades since 1988, the long awaited return of DSA and NATSEC this time will be the first and biggest international event hosted by Malaysia, as we enter the transition into the endemic phase beginning April 1,” he added.

Events over the last decade have demonstrated that DSA and NATSEC Asia are still relevant in promoting lasting peace in the region. It was the ideal platform to promote a better understanding of challenges, issues, and problems; as a stage to forge multilateral cooperation between Nations to meet common challenges; and as a place for productive and meaningful dialogue.

In providing Security and Law Enforcement Agencies with the latest technologies, tools and solutions to combat adversaries and the proliferation of transborder crimes in an age of Multi-Domain threats and asymmetric conflicts, DSA and NATSEC Asia again pushed the technological boundaries. As a marketplace for the latest in Defence and Security hardware, it is second to none.

“Events like Defence Services Asia 2022 and National Security Asia 2022 are crucial for us as they bring together the best of both worlds under one event. We will not only be able to witness military technological breakthroughs, but also be exposed to what is trending in the world of National Security. Both components are pivotal for us in exploring advancements that can help us improve our Defence and Security,” said Dato’ Seri Hamzah Bin Zainudin, Minister of Home Affairs, Malaysia.

Over the years, DSA has been instrumental in establishing relations between Nations grappling with the same security issues and challenges. It has resulted in numerous collaborations across a wide variety of fields. Another one of DSA’s beneficiaries were the region’s Police Forces. DSA served as a platform for Inter-Agency Cooperation, especially in the area of combating transborder crime. DSA’s contribution to fostering better relations among the many Police Forces in the region is immeasurable.

Clearly, DSA and NATSEC Asia have evolved over the years, taking into account the varied and extensive nature of threats and challenges facing Nations around the world. It has kept pace with these threats and will do so for the foreseeable future.

Thales Showcased Air Defence Starstreak and Next Gen. Tank Killer NLAW
Thales came to DSA 2022 with a strong operator endorsement for its Next-Generation Light Anti-Tank Weapon (NLAW). The UK Government has gifted over 3,600 of them to the Ukrainian Armed Forces to help with the resistance against the Russian invasion. Their Soldiers have destroyed multiple Russian Tanks and AFVs with them.

In addition, Thales is the manufacturer of the Starstreak Air Defence Missile, which is also about to be deployed in Ukraine. The British Army has mounted an accelerated training programme in Eastern Europe for the Ukrainian Army, which will receive a large quantity of the missiles.

Both weapons are manufactured in Belfast, Northern Ireland. The Shoulder-Fired NLAW was designed by Saab, and licensed to Thales for production. It weighs 27.5 pounds (12.5 kilograms) and has a range of some 2,600 feet (800 metres). About 14,000 have been made for the British Army.

The Starstreak is the latest in a long line of Short-Range Air Defence (SHORAD) Missiles from Belfast. Unlike most SHORADs, which employ infrared guidance that can be countered or decoyed, it is a Twin Laser Beam-rider that closes to the target at up to Mach 3. It is aimed by an Optical Sight. The ‘kill’ is made by three Tungsten Darts or ‘Hittiles’ that separate from the body of the weapon as it closes on the target. Range is over three miles and maximum height over 3,000ft (914m). The Malaysian Army was an early customer for the Starstreak, which it named locally as the Rapid Ranger. At DSA 2022, Thales’ Malaysian Partner Westar displayed a 4×4 Vehicle with the Starstreak Launcher mounted on top. Malaysia also bought the portable-stand Lightweight Multiple Launcher (LML). The missile can also be shoulder-fired. Only recently, the Malaysian Army conducted another successful firing trial, shooting down target Drones on its range in Johor.

Nexter Displays CAESAR 6x6, Placing Combat Superiority, Technology and Industry Cooperation at the Forefront
Nexter exhibited at Defence Services Asia (DSA) to provide the Malaysian Army and our other Asian Partners with solutions to their Artillery, Vehicles and Ammunition needs. Besides CAESAR, Armoured Vehicles, Ammunition, Medium Caliber and Robotics were  displayed. The CAESAR 6x6 is a 155mm Self-Propelled Artillery Gun System mounted on a conventional truck chassis. Particularly light for its range, the CAESAR 6x6 adapts to all terrains and infrastructures, and is air transportable in a C-130 Tactical Transport Aircraft. Its tactical mobility is also ensured by its rapid battery commissioning and simplified resupply. This gun, which has already been acquired by eight countries worldwide, has been successfully used in combat by the French Army, notably in Iraq. The CAESAR 6x6 has demonstrated its ability to fire at long range with very high rates of fire, and has been upgraded on a regular basis, such as the MkII Version recently ordered by France.

The 105LG1 is a 105mm Towed Artillery Gun renowned for its reliability and unrivalled lightness (1,650kg). Its ability to be transported by any type of vehicle, aircraft, helicopter, and even to be airdropped, provides the ideal mobility for troops operating in extreme climates and difficult terrain. The 105LG1 is the cost-effective answer to the Malaysian Army's need for modern equipment, with which Nexter is developing a strong cooperation in the Artillery field.

Nexter also offers its 20 and 25mm Guns to equip 6x6 or 4x4 Land Vehicles. Particularly easy to use and maintain, the M621 20mm Gun is more effective than Machine Guns and takes up less space than larger calibres. It can be operated directly by the operator on the P20 Mount or from an ARX20 Remotely Operated Turret. In addition, Nexter presented the ARX 25, a compact and lightweight turret whose 25mm Gun has been tested in combat on the VBCI. It allows precise firing in complete safety under armour, day and night, with a very significant power for this calibre.

The TITUS is a 6x6 Armoured Vehicle of the latest generation which combines great versatility, a significant transport capacity and unprecedented mobility even in urban areas. Designed for troop transport and capable of being equipped with various payloads, it can be adapted to all missions thanks to its kits: combat, internal security, etc. Adapted to today's needs, it offers its crew optimal protection against ballistic projectiles, mines and IEDs. The TITUS can operate robots thanks to its latest-generation Vetronics, and has an ARX 25 Remotely Operated Turret. Finally, Nexter exhibited its Smart Munitions, such as the BONUS Anti-Armour Shell, which uses two independent warheads to hit its targets through the roof - with Top Attack mode. Developed thanks to major investments in Research and Development, these products offer unprecedented operational capabilities to their users by relying on very high precision guidance.

Advanced Defence Systems (ADS) Collaborates with Nexter for CAESAR 155mm 52 Calibre Wheeled Light Self-Propelled Artillery System

With the aim of enhancing the innovation of the Artillery Systems, Advanced Defence Systems (ADS) offers the CAESAR 155mm 52 Calibre Wheeled Light Self-Propelled Artillery System, to pursue opportunities within the Malaysian Armed Forces for additional supports in operations. ADS was recently awarded the contract to supply 18 Units of the Nexter 105mm LG1 MKIII Artillery Systems to the Malaysian Army and intends to expand on such success through the development of turnkey Surveillance programmes for the Malaysian Armed Forces as a whole. Through a collaboration with Nexter, ADS intends to provide the Malaysian Armed Forces with Services and Solutions with CAESAR, that is capable of supporting all types of motorized, mechanized or Armoured Units, including Rapid Deployment Forces.

The CAESAR combines the high mobility of a truck with the power of a 155mm 52 Calibre Gun. It is the only long-range proven 52 calibre in the world with 70% of the ammunition fired in combat missions in Iraq (above 18,000) in maximum charges, with very high accuracy and crew safety performances. In addition, it demonstrates unrivalled mobility as this 18 ton system is air transportable in Lockheed Martin’s C-130 and can be adapted to any road, with limited impact on supply. The operational use of the CAESAR has validated the concept: a manual resupply facilitated by its Ammunition Lockers, a Semi-Automatic Reloading System resistant to extreme weather conditions, and a crew of five people capable of remaining operational over time.

Highly modular, the CAESAR 6x6 can be reinforced with an over-armour kit to enhance its ballistic and anti-IED protection, which is fitted to the CAESAR MkII ordered by France this year. Moreover, in terms of mobility, the CAESAR can be integrated on any conventional carriers depending on User's needs.

Nexter, the leading French Land Defence Company and third European player in the Ammunition Sector is part of the KNDS Group. The scope of its business includes as well the supply of Weapon Systems and Ammunition for Air and Naval Forces. Nexter also provides Systems and Protection Solutions in the field of Homeland Security.
