Fully Committed to ‘Make-in-India’
India’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh had earlier visited the Safran Aircraft Engines Villaroche Facility near Paris in October 2019, when the Safran Aircraft Engines CEO reiterated the importance of the close ties of unity between the company and India in the Civil and Military Sectors. The visit had taken place soon after the handover of the first Rafale Fighter to the Indian Air Force at Dassault Aviation's Mérignac Facility in France. India is especially interested in the Assembly Line of the M88, the Engine designed and built by Safran Aircraft Engines for the Dassault Aviation Rafale.

The Engine’s exceptional performance - up to 7.5 tons of thrust with afterburner - is a direct result of Safran's expertise, as reflected in advanced technologies such as Blisks (Integrally Bladed Disks) and Powder-Metallurgy Disks, Ceramic Coated Single-Crystal High-Pressure Turbine Blades and Microstructural Composites. The manoeuverability and carefree handling afforded by the M88 have been widely recognised in the theatres of operations.


The M88 has clocked up above 700,000 Flight Hours since 2004 and powers the Rafales operated by the French Air Force and Navy. It will also power the aircraft ordered by the Rafale Consortium's seven export customers: Egypt, Qatar, India, Croatia, Greece, UAE and Indonesia. As a result of international successes, Safran Aircraft Engines had earlier launched a programme to modernise its Industrial Facilities and triple Production Capacities for the M88 Engines.


Safran Military Engines’ M88-2 Engines to be ‘Made-in-India’
France’s biggest Jet Engine Maker Safran Aircraft Engines is ready to make Fighter Engines and Ancillaries in India. While France is willing to offer more Rafale Fighters to India, Safran’s offer of making the Safran (Snecma) M88 Engines in India, four years from the day the contract is signed, is a welcome proposal. Not only will the M88 Engines be used by Rafale Fighters, but these can also be deployed to power the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas Mark-II Medium Weight Fighters (MWF) and the Twin-Engine 5th Generation Advanced Multi-Role Combat Aircraft (AMCA) developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). The IAF is buying 83 LCA Mark-1A Fighter, taking the total number of Tejas Variants ordered to 123. Safran is said to be willing to offer engines with no third-country Spare Parts so that no additional approvals are needed, and with 100% Indigenisation.

The French Fighters and Engines offers keeps coming up for discussions during Indian & French Government dialogues and official meetings, with the Indian Defence Secretary Dr. Ajay Kumar recently visiting Paris in December 2021, and the French Armed Forces Minister Florence Parly recently meeting Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi. While DRDO can continue developing its own Fighter Engine Kaveri, the Safran Engine will fill the gaps between Development and Manufacturing.


Safran M88-2: Proven Performance and Reliability
Dassault Aviation's Rafale Fighter is powered by two M88 Engines. This Turbofan Bypass Engine is designed, developed and produced by Safran Aircraft Engines. It delivers 7.5 tons of thrust with afterburner. The M88 develops 16,500 pounds of thrust with afterburner, and harbours growth potential of 20%. It is ideally suited to both low-altitude penetration and high-altitude Interception Missions, thanks to its exceptionally carefree handling. In just 4 Seconds, the time needed for an M88 to reach maximum power, i.e. 16,500 lbs with afterburner, with 1500°C being the M88 Turbine inlet temperature. As Modern Armed Forces demand maximum Force Projection Capability, coupled with a minimal logistics footprint, both dispatch reliability and maintainability were built into the M88 from the outset.

The M88’s fully Modular Design facilitates all Maintenance Operations. It is also perfectly integrated in the Rafale's Airframe, which means that it can be removed and reinstalled in less than an hour by two Crew Members. The Rafale is also the only Combat Aircraft in the world that can return to flight status after its engines have been removed for On-site Servicing, without having to undergo a new bench test. It takes just 1 hour and only 2 persons to remove and reinstall an M88 Engine on a Rafale Fighter.


Based on the Development Programme defined by Dassault Aviation and French Defence Procurement Agency DGA, Safran Aircraft Engines has started development work on the M88 to offer the best technological solutions for the Rafale Standard F4 by about 2023. Standard F4 incorporates feedback from Rafale Operations, and is the first Aircraft Upgrade to include an Engine Upgrade too. Safran Aircraft Engines started work on M88 Engine Upgrades in January 2019. These changes will enable the company to offer solutions that are better suited to the current Aircraft Standards and will also match the requirements of the Rafale Standard F4, towards 2023.


The Standard F4, which integrates operating feedback, is the first Rafale Upgrade that also includes an Engine Upgrade. As part of this new Standard, Safran Aircraft Engines is focusing on Electronics, both on the Aircraft (the Electronic Engine Control) and on the Ground (SPAD System). These New Solutions offer greater Data Storage Capacity, faster Data Transmission to Ground Stations and more efficient analysis. The main objective is to improve dispatch reliability by enabling ‘Predictive Maintenance’ based on a Big Data approach.

Safran M88 Maintenance Training Center at the Istres Air Force Base in South France
On December 3rd, 2019, Safran Aircraft Engines had inaugurated the Maintenance Training Center for the Rafale’s M88 Engine at French Air Base 125 in Istres, Southern France. This State-of-the-Art Maintenance Training Center includes the latest Educational Tools, such as Virtual and Augmented Reality. To carry out this project, Safran Aircraft Engines benefited from the support of the French Air Force, the DGA’s Flight Testing Department, the Istres Air Base, the Istres Defence Infrastructure Department and Dassault Aviation, which also has a Facility at the Air Base. In line with the dynamic export performance of the Rafale Fighter, this Project allows Safran to continue offering  customers real World-Class Support Services.


Both the French Air Force and Navy expect the M88-Powered Rafale Fighter to stay in Service beyond 2060, therefore the need to develop Support Capabilities for the next 40 years, wth the synergies being developed between Safran Aircraft Engines’ new Training Center and EPNER1 to support all Rafale Users, both in France and abroad.


Since late October 2019, Safran Aircraft Engines had welcomed 12 Mechanics from the Indian Air Force (IAF), which had taken the  delivery of India’s first Rafale Fighters. In 2017, Safran Aircraft Engines started a new Open-Air Test Cell in Istres for tests of the Open Rotor Demonstrator and Future Engines to be developed. This facility reflects a dynamic Regional Cluster organised around the Istres Test Center, which enjoys strong support from Public Authorities and Partnerships formed with local industry and academia in the area.

Safran Offers to Help India Develop First Indigenous Fighter Engine
French Aerospace Company Safran, the Manufacturer of M88 Engines for Rafale Fighters, has earlier expressed its willingness to help India develop its first Indigenous Fighter Aircraft Engine. A proposal was sent to the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) about this earlier, while briefing the visiting Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Safran Aircraft Engines’ Military and Civil Projects in India. Safran had sent the Proposal willing to Transfer the Technology and this could be the way forward for the first Indigenous Fighter Aircraft Engine. It will be a big boost for 'Make-in-India' if the proposal works out, and as reported, it also meant that India would be able to export the Engines to any country that uses the Rafale Fighter.


When Defence Minister Rajnath Singh had earlier visited the Safran Aircraft Engines Facility in Villaroche, he was given a presentation and did a tour of the facility. Further, studies have reportedly been done for the possibility of Manufacturing an Indigenous Engine for the Indian-made Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas Mk-II.


India and France expect further enhancement of their ties, especially in the arena of Defence Cooperation. "We will support the 'Make-in-India' Policy. Let us look at the future. You didn't just opt for a fighter, but opted for enhancement of Military Partnership. We will do our best to meet your requirement," French Armed Forces Minister Florence Parly had said after the induction of the Rafale Fighter.


The two Defence Ministers have met recently for the 3rd Annual Defence Dialogue in New Delhi and reviewed the status of bilateral cooperation in the field, which is a key pillar of the India-France Strategic Partnership. The Ministers further had talks on offers for more Rafales for the IAF, and for the Indian Navy, which has recently tested the Dassault Aviation Rafale Marine Variant in Goa for the Aircraft Carrier-Borne Fighters tender. India had also earlier separately announced plans for Joint Military Production of Safran Aircraft Engines in India.


Safran in India
Safran has been present in India for more than 65 years and today has 600 employees in eight companies and a Training Center, all working in production, design or services in the Aeronautics and Defence Industries. Opened in 2010, this Training Center can train more than 500 technicians a year. Safran had already announced in 2018 the construction of a Safran Electrical & Power Factory to produce LEAP Engines Harnesses and Rafale Fighter Electrical Wiring Interconnections Systems. Safran Aircraft Engines Hyderabad Private Limited is registered at RGIA, Shamshabad in Hyderabad, Telangana.


With the new Safran Aircraft Engines Plant in Hyderabad, Safran is expanding its local footprint, while also leveraging synergies with the Indian Aerospace Industry. The LEAP Engine is manufactured by CFM International, which is a 50/50 Joint Company between Safran Aircraft Engines and GE. Safran Aircraft Engines has also built a new plant in Hyderabad to make parts for the LEAP Turbofan Engine from the CFM International JV.


Above 75% of Indian Aircraft and Helicopters are equipped by Safran and 1,500+ Helicopter Turbines, including Shakti/Ardiden 1H1 Engine, are in Service in India. Helicopter Engines MRO Pvt. Ltd. (HE-MRO) is a JV between Safran and HAL, aiming to support the Indian Armed Forces. Safran is one of the main contributors to the 36 Rafales acquired by India.

Safran companies produce a large proportion of the systems and equipment, for instance besides the M88 Engine, the Power Transmission System, the Landing Gear, the Wheels and Carbon Brakes, the Ring Laser Gyro Inertial Navigation System, the Gyroscopes for the Fly-by-Wire System, the Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) and all the Wiring Systems. Safran is in addition managing the project for the Hammer Modular Air-to-Ground Weapon (AASM).

It is also the primary supplier of Inertial Navigation Systems for Indian Combat Aircraft. Sigma 95N Navigation Systems are used in the Sukhoi 30, Tejas, MiG-27, MiG-29, Jaguar and Hawk AJTs. Over 500 Fighter Aircraft used by the Indian Air Force and Navy are equipped with Inertial Navigation Systems produced by Safran.
