Pawan Hans Leases Six Lockheed Martin’s Sikorsky S-76D Helicopters from Milestone Aviation
Pawan Hans Limited (PHL), a Government of India Company under Ministry of Civil Aviation had announced that it signed agreements for the leasing of six Sikorsky S-76D Helicopters from The Milestone Aviation Group Limited, the global leader in Helicopter Leasing. The announcement was made during the Wings India 2022 Show in Hyderabad, India.

The aircraft will support Pawan Hans’ onshore and offshore Helicopter Operations in India with Pawan Hans contracted to operate two S-76D Helicopters for the Government of India’s Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC).
In addition to the six helicopters, of which five have already been delivered, Milestone and Sikorsky, a Lockheed Martin Company are also providing Pawan Hans with comprehensive value and sustainment packages to support the phasing-in of this new helicopter type into its fleet.

Speaking at Wings India, Sanjeev Razdan, Chairman and Managing Director of Pawan Hans said, “Pawan Hans is the market leader and is very selective in bringing the ideal technology relevant for the Indian market. In the Medium-Twin Category, the S-76D is the ideal aircraft to support our offshore operations in South Asia. The helicopter has been launched with a completely new Maintenance and Support philosophy by Pawan Hans. With agreements in place with several OEMs, and the introduction of the technologically advanced S-76D Helicopter, Pawan Hans is playing a pivotal role in bringing Next-Generation Helicopter Operations to the Indian market.”

Michael York, Head of Emerging Markets at Milestone said “The S-76D is a new helicopter platform type for Pawan Hans that will enhance their operations with greater capabilities and advanced technologies. Through this transaction, we are not only cultivating a new operator for the S-76D, but also starting a long-term relationship between Milestone and Pawan Hans.”

“The Milestone Team has worked hard to put together a comprehensive value package for Pawan Hans. This value package is a key differentiator for Milestone and illustrates the depth of service capability that we offer, bringing tailor-made solutions to our customers. Milestone is proud to have been selected by Pawan Hans as their Leasing Partner and we thank them for the trust they have placed in us.”

“We welcome Pawan Hans into the Lockheed Martin Family, and we value our continued relationship with Milestone. Lockheed Martin is thrilled that Pawan Hans is introducing the S-76D aircraft to the Indian market to perform critical offshore oil and gas transport missions,” said Bill Blair, Chief Executive Lockheed Martin India. “Selection of these advanced aircraft combined with Sikorsky's Support Services will ensure high availability rates for customers that rightly demand reliability and performance and are aligned with Lockheed Martin's focus on such an important region”.

The legendary S-76 Helicopter operates successfully in more than 40 countries on six continents, fulfilling its many missions in varied environmental conditions. Sikorsky, a Lockheed Martin Company has delivered more than 875 S-76 Helicopters to customers globally since 1977, contributing daily to a growing total of more than 7.5 million flight hours. The S-76D Helicopter, through its application of modern technologies, is designed to provide a substantial increase in performance, power and value.

Pawan Hans Limited (PHL), A Public Sector Undertaking under Ministry of Civil Aviation, is the market leader in Helicopter Operations in India since 1985, with a fleet of 42 Helicopters. It provides services to important sectors like Oil and Gas Exploration, Pipeline Survey and Aerial-Work using Heliborne Lidar/Photogrammetry, Police and Para-Public, Utility, VIP and Corporate (State Government, PSU and UT) and Passenger transport (for connectivity to remote, border, hilly and inaccessible areas of North and North-East India) and Inter Island Connectivity in Andaman Nicobar and Lakshadweep Islands, respectively. PHL also serves the General Aviation market through their other business segments like Fixed Base Operations (FBO), Maintenance Repair and Overhaul (MRO), Training and Development of Aviation Infrastructure. PHL is playing a pivotal role in Regional Connectivity Scheme through the Schedule Commuter Permit acquired for the purpose and has ambitious plans to add small Fixed-Wing and Seaplanes to its existing operations.

The Sikorsky S-76D Helicopter has an unmatched record of safety and reliability. The S-76D Helicopter delivers the safety, reliability and efficiency customers have come to expect from the S-76 Family of aircraft, but with faster cruise speed and more efficient fuel burn. At Aero India 2021, Lockheed Martin and Tata Advanced Systems Limited had signed a Letter of Intent to Team-up for the S-76D offering for the Indian Navy’s Naval Utility Helicopter (NUH) programme.

Elaborating on the Lockheed Martin offer with Tata for the Naval Utility Helicopter (NUH) competition under the 'Make-in-India' programme and on the Teaming Agreement signed between Lockheed Martin and Tata Advanced Systems Ltd. for the Indian Navy's NUH, William L. Blair, Vice President and Chief Executive, Lockheed Martin India, had said in an earlier Interview to Chanakya, “Sikorsky, a Lockheed Martin Company, responded to the request for Expression of Interest (EOI) for the India Naval Utility Helicopter (NUH) programme. We look forward to providing this capability to the Government of India and remain committed to fostering technology development, manufacturing and strategic collaboration in India, while maintaining high-value, high-skill technical jobs in the U.S., abroad and across our Supply Base. We strongly feel that globally structured programmes like this one create unique opportunities for knowledge-sharing and Technology Transfer that strengthen the industries of all involved. At Aero India 2021, Lockheed Martin and Tata Advanced Systems Limited announced a Teaming Agreement for the Indian Naval Utility Helicopter (NUH) programme.”

“Lockheed Martin is committed to assisting in the growth of India’s Strategic Security Capabilities and development of an Indigenous Defence Manufacturing Ecosystem in India. Our Joint Ventures with Tata are a testament to the success of Indian Government’s Mission to create an ‘AtmaNirbhar Bharat’ in Defence,” said William L. Blair, Vice President and Chief Executive, Lockheed Martin India.

Indian Navy's MH-60R Romeo Helicopters
“The Indian Navy's acquisition of MH-60R "Romeo" Helicopter is the largest contract Lockheed Martin has ever signed with India. Through the India MH-60R Programme, Lockheed Martin is excited to work with Indian companies to further develop long-term potential business relationships. The MH-60R "Romeo" is the most capable and mature Anti-Submarine (ASW)/Anti-Surface Warfare (ASuW) Multi-Mission Helicopter available in the world today. The MH-60R is deployed globally with the U.S. Navy Fleet and a growing number of International Navies. The MH-60R employs a modular design, which refers to the ability to modify Weapon Systems to match specific mission requirements. The modular design gives this single platform the agility to provide greater surveillance and flexibility capabilities, as well as more options for Multiple Mission requirements.

The U.S. Navy has already delivered the first three aircraft to the Indian Navy in 2021. These aircraft are currently at Naval Air Station North Island in San Diego, California, where the U.S. Navy and Indian Navy crew and pilots are undergoing training. Three additional aircraft will be delivered in 2022 and these aircraft will be deployed to the Indian Navy to start the initial stand-up of the first Multi-Role Helicopter Squadron. A total of 24 MH-60Rs will be delivered in country over the next few years,” said William L. Blair, Vice President and Chief Executive, Lockheed Martin India.

F-21 Fighter Offered to the IAF
Lockheed Martin is strengthening its F-21 offer with the most technologically advanced Complex Aerostructures - a “Made-in-India”, fuel-carrying, 9G, 12,000 hour, Interchangeable/Replaceable Fighter Wing, which was recently manufactured at Tata Lockheed Martin Aerostructures Limited (TLMAL) Facility in Hyderabad. TLMAL exemplifies the Government of India’s “Make-in-India” goals and also serves as the single global source of C-130J Empennage Assemblies installed on all new Super Hercules Aircraft. In September 2021, TLMAL reached the milestone of manufacturing and delivering the 150th C-130J Empennage.

The Lockheed Martin-TATA F-21 Fighter Aircraft, is on offer to the Indian Air Force (IAF) in the MRFA Competition. The company is leveraging both 4th and 5th Generation Technologies to offer the best solution to meet or exceed the IAF’s capability needs, provide ‘Make-in-India’ industrial opportunities, and accelerate India-U.S. Cooperation on advanced technologies, including but not limited to Fighter Aircraft. The F-21 demonstrates Lockheed Martin’s commitment in delivering an advanced, scalable Single-Engine Fighter to the IAF - For India, From India.

Further, India’s workhorse, C-130J Super Hercules Airlifter, which represents a strong legacy of Partnership between India and the U.S., is already operated by the Indian Air Force. The IAF uses its fleet to support a variety of Missions, from Cargo delivery to providing vital humanitarian aid. The IAF extensively used its fleet of Super Hercules for humanitarian efforts in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic as well as for transportation of relief materials, equipment and personnel in the areas affected by Cyclones Yaas and Tauktae.

As part of the Javelin Joint Venture, Lockheed Martin also produces the Javelin Anti-Tank Guided Missile System of interest to the Indian Army. This versatile and effective One-Man-Portable and Platform-employed Multi-Target Precision Weapon System provides capability to defeat a broad spectrum of Close-Combat threats on the Modern Battlefield.

Using ‘Fire-and-Forget’ Technology, the weapon guides itself to the target without external commands, allowing Soldiers to take cover or reposition. With a range of 65m to 4 km in most operational conditions, it has the ability to operate through adverse weather and battlefield obscurants. The Javelin can be deployed in a variety of environments and conditions.

Lockheed Martin continues to build upon more than seven decades of association and three decades of Partnerships with India by nurturing and expanding collaborations with local industry to support the evolution of Indigenous Defence Manufacturing Ecosystems, and further advance India’s Strategic Security and Industrial Capabilities. These range from Transport, Maritime and Fighter Aircraft, to Shipborne Air and Missile Defence Projects, as well as capabilities in Civil Sectors, including new and renewable energy.

Headquartered in Bethesda, Maryland, Lockheed Martin Corporation is a Global Security and Aerospace Company that employs approximately 114,000 people worldwide and is principally engaged in the Research, Design, Development, Manufacture, Integration and sustainment of Advanced Technology Systems, products and services.

Present in India for over three decades, Lockheed Martin is proud of its longstanding relationships and commitment to customers and Partners on existing and future programmes. A Strategic Partner and developer of sovereign industrial, workforce and enterprise capability, Lockheed Martin India’s Joint Ventures, apprenticeships, and founding membership of the India Innovation Growth Programme underscore its conviction in Indian Industry, talent and progress.                       - Sunil Nigam
